My family and I were supposed to come here for my birthday dinner but we changed the plan a few times. So instead, we came here for my dad’s birthday, 15 days later!  Looking over the menu, I could tell that they served more authentic dishes than other restaurants in Hamilton. The menu is separated by appetizers, starches, proteins, vegetables, Chef’s specials, and drinks. It’s a pretty big menu, so take you time with it and don’t be afraid to ask for help. You’ll be able to find Thai classics like Tom Yum Gong, Pad Thai, and curry. A lot of the dishes are stir fried proteins with vegetables and are packed with flavour. For Asian cuisine, I always encourage my friends to eat ‘Family-style’ – order a few dishes and share everything. Growing up in a Chinese household, this was how we ate dinner everyday. Don’t restrain yourself to one dish, try everything! If you’re concerned about hygiene and cooties, just ask for more forks/spoons and designate them as serving utensils.

Chicken Satay and Tom Yum Gong

After examining the novel of a menu, we were finally ready to order. We started off with a bowl of Tom Yum Gong ($5.95) and 4 skewers of chicken satay. For our mains, we ordered Duck curry $14.95, Pad Thai (adventurous, right?) $11.95, and Volcano Seafood $15.95. The soup was deep in spiced flavours with a good kick of lime and a hint of sweetness. The chili oil and the lime are the strongest flavours in the soup while supporting flavours of sweet and salty round it out. The chicken satay came with a chunky peanut dipping sauce. The meat was tender with beautiful char marks and a curry or turmeric flavour.

Moving onto the mains. The Pad Thai was what we expected. The noodles may seem too undercooked to some people but it was perfect for me. I love noodles with a bite to them. The sauce was standard with hints of dish sauce, lime juice and almost a tad too much sugar. The duck curry was filled with fresh vegetables, bamboo shoots, and roasted duck. The flavour of the curry was again, a balance of spicy and sweet. The coconut milk gave it an exotic flavour while the vegetables added a refreshing crunch. The texture of the duck was chewier than what I’m used to, it seemed like it was a tad overcooked. I paired my curry with a bowl of delicious coconut rice. They also have sticky rice, jasmine, brown rice. Even though there was already coconut milk in the curry, it wasn’t overpowering with the two together.

Lastly, the Volcano Seafood made heads turn as our waiter threw the seafood mixture onto a hot plate to let it dramatically sizzle on our table. I guess I would’ve been impressed if it was my first time seeing food sizzle on a hot plate… it smelled delicious though. Mussels, shrimp, squid, and scallop were tossed with bell peppers, bamboo shoots, and eggplants in their house special sauce. The flavours were pretty mild and it wasn’t anything too exciting.

Overall, the service was great and we enjoyed our dinner in a comforting atmosphere. The menu isn’t as intimidating as you might think. The chef can also cook certain dishes with no spice, you just have to ask!
