A few friends and I headed to Ottawa Street to check out Caro, the new Italian restaurant that sprung up in the East end. Right at the corner of Ottawa and Main, this bright restaurant adds to the eclectic collection of shops over there. Sunlight beams in from the two street-side windows of this classically modern space, fantastic lighting for photos. The first thing you’ll notice is the red tiled back splash behind the bar. The huge typographic mural that says “Beloved” and the living wall are also instant  eye-catchers. On the corner of Lakeshore Road and Locust Street, Table 34 is in a prime spot for anyone who wants to explore the Burlington food scene. It has a beautiful view of Lake Ontario, sitting directly across from Spencer Smith Park. There’s also plenty of street parking with free parking on weekends in the nearby parkade, it’s close to the Burlington Performing Arts Centre (perfect for a bite to eat before or after a show), and it stands among some of the best restaurants and shops in town.Read More »

The Beverly on Locke

The newest addition to Locket Street in Hamilton is the fancy-pants, breakfast and brunch restaurant called, The Beverly. Some of you might have seen their teaser tweets and posts on social media before opening weekend. They made us curious about their beautifully designed space and brand. Well, it got me lookin’! I went with Jen (@tastehamont) and our SO’s on their second day and dove in with high expectations. 48 Hours in New York City

It was Victoria Day long weekend in Canada, so I decided to drive 8 hours to visit Sally in New York City! With only 48 hours, we did as much as we could and tried to avoid the typical tourist-destinations. I told Sally I wanted a local-tour AKA a hipster-tour, bring me to all the restaurants and areas where I can appreciate the food, architecture, and atmosphere. Apple Crumble Ingredients

Apple Crumble with ‘Naturally Imperfect’ Produce

Cook & Prep Time: 50 minutes  |  Feeds: 4 people

One of my favourite aromatic and flavour pairings is apples apples and cinnamon. The whiff of the sweet apples and spices makes me think of the Autumn breeze, pies, and apple cider. Wherever I see this combo on a menu, I’ll naturally gravitate towards it because it’s like a comforting hug on my tongue.

Ingredients

8-10 no name Naturally Imperfect apples, unpeeled, cored
½ cup sugar
½ cup no name Quick Oats
½ cup all purpose flour
½ cup salted butter
1 tsp cinnamon (maybe 2-3 tsp if you love cinnamon like I do!)

Jamie’s Italian Yorkdale

You’ve probably seen Jamie Oliver’s face on the Food Network, around the world, and all over Sobey’s Better Food to Canadians campaign. I remember the days when I’d watch his cooking show, Oliver’s Twist, where he would pump out incredibly simple dishes in a casual and laid back way. His kitchen on-set was fun and bright with bluish-purple walls and a collection of jars and containers for various spices, herbs, and dried goods. His personality was down-to-earth and it just seemed like he wanted to spread his knowledge about food with everyone.Read More »
