A few friends and I headed to Ottawa Street to check out Caro, the new Italian restaurant that sprung up in the East end. Right at the corner of Ottawa and Main, this bright restaurant adds to the eclectic collection of shops over there. Sunlight beams in from the two street-side windows of this classically modern space, fantastic lighting for photos. The first thing you’ll notice is the red tiled back splash behind the bar. The huge typographic mural that says “Beloved” and the living wall are also instant eye-catchers. Noodz. Where did this word even come from? Well, I’m sure with the slightly immature minds of many people out there, the word would appear sooner or later. I can’t pin point the exact date when it popped into my conversations with my good friend, Ken, but I definitely remember we joked around endlessly about noodz close to half a year to a year ago. We talked about eating noodles a lot, like it turned into a weekly thing. And of course, our minds needed to give it a better, shorter, more appropriate name, noodz.

Located in Stoney Creek, Lotus brings Vietnamese and Thai food into the area on the East side of the Red Hill Valley Parkway. Getting into the plaza is a bit tricky if you’re coming from the West side. Google Maps told me to drive past the plaza, make a u-turn, then pull into the parking lot because there is a median cutting access to it if you’re traveling East on Mud Street. Whenever my family and I get stuck on deciding on a restaurant for dinner, we somehow end up at New Northing Dumplings on Silver Star Boulevard in Markham. We keep going back because their dishes are less greasy compared to the majority of Chinese restaurants. The dishes are cold (tossed together like a salad), steamed, cooked in broth or boiled. There are also fried items but the cooking methods are pretty balanced. It’s a family-friendly restaurant with minimal effort put into interior design. The restaurant runs efficiently where staff will waste no time in taking you order to clearing tables. Whenever my friends and I don’t feel like driving down the Linc to Upper James for pho, we go to Royal Pho. It’s a great alternative if you’ve been to the same pho restaurants over and over again. The décor is interesting and authenic. The walls are covered in a pastel green with dark wood paneling and furniture. It’s a clean, brightly lit and family-friendly restaurant.
This is one of three competing noodle restaurants in Baldwin Village. Their menu is minimal and clear, with beautiful photography. I haven’t been to a lot of ramen restaurants, but ordering was kinda different. Each ramen comes with a special sauce and there are six to choose from.
