The annual event is back in Hamilton for its 4th year in a row. Feast for St. Joseph’s is a month-long fundraising event between February 19th to March 19th. Six local Hamilton restaurants are participating and 10% of your food sale is being donated to St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation.

The stars aligned and I finally found an occasion (my birthday) to visit the infamous Aberdeen Tavern of Hamilton. A proud supporter of all things local and reasonably healthy menu items, Romby’s Tavern serves the usual pub fare with health conscious dishes sprinkled-in. The restaurant has called St. Catharines home for 30 years and in 2010, the Wilson family continued to run the restaurant with a few changes of their own. A shift in food and lifestyle cause a change in their menu as well. We all know when you go to a pub you want smoked meats, wings, nachos, and all the greasy foods your body can’t handle because, why not? The new owners kept those traditional items and added healthier options for those who prefer not to poison their bodies. Did you know the original restaurant where the Buffalo wing was invented opened up in Hamilton recently? They’ve been here, in Jackson Square, for a couple of years! Originating from, of course, Buffalo, NY, the restaurant is proud of its history. Anchor Bar just renovated the dining area and plan to spruce up their roof-top patio for the summer months. The restaurant can be accessed at street level off King Street West across from the Art Gallery of Hamilton, or inside Jackson Square across from the LCBO. The interior is spacious with grey walls, flatscreens, and a pizza station in the middle. There’s a modern sports bar vibe in this family-friendly environment, perfect for a casual dinner watching your favourite sports teams duke it out.
In 2014, Urbanicity launched their first Novemburger festival in the awesome city of Hamilton. It gathered Hamiltonians and neighbours in the surrounding cities to check out local restaurants, while raising funds for the United Way in our community. Restaurants showcased one special burger for the month of November and we got to rate them. I wasn’t able to check out the event last year, so I made sure to participate this year! Situated in the busy area of King Street East, Serve Ping Pong is a space with 10,000 sq. ft. of entertainment and good eats. What once used to be the Hamilton Spectator Building, they have transformed the desolate space into a modern lounge fully equipped with brand spanking new ping pong tables, an eating area, a private room, and a beautiful bar. The hardwood floors, wooden pillars, decorative ceilings, and brick walls transport you back to simpler times. Once you step in, you’d be amazed at the amount of open space. It’s perfect for large parties and functions, plus it’s at a convenient location. The space is divided into dine/play and dine/drink. If you’re not interested in the intense sport of table tennis, their menu is worth checking out. This little Italian restaurant is tucked away on James Street South and is really easy to miss. I’ve driven by that area a bajillion times since I was a kid and I’ve never noticed the restaurant – it’s pretty much a hidden gem. Inside, seating is very limited with a few stools at the bar. The walls are painted red like tomato sauce. Decor is dated but it has a homey feel. Once you step in the door, you’re hit with the aroma of delicious pasta and pizza. If you scan the tables, you’ll find huge bowls overflowing with pasta, raised dishes of freshly baked pizza, baskets of chicken wings, and drinking glasses (if there’s room).Read More »
I’ve recently been dragging my friends to a few restaurants on James Street North in Hamilton including Saltlick, Charred, Jack & Lois, and Mulberry Street Café. Every time we wander around, we also discover other restaurants to check out. This time we stopped-in at Acclamation – across the street from Mulberry Street Café. The interiors and exteriors are elegant, neutral, and classy. Deep wooden fixtures and furniture sit in a romantic, cozy space. The staff are friendly, respectful, and patient. We had two gluten-intolerant diners in our party and they were able to find a few items to suit their needs.
