Bean Bar | 25th Anniversary

Bean Bar has been a Westdale staple since my high school days. When anyone would mention Westdale restaurants, Bean Bar would be one of the firsts to pop in my head. Their food is great but their dessert selection is what they’re known for. This year is Bean Bar’s 25th anniversary and to celebrate, they’ve made a few changes. A huge mural spans the length of the right wall as an ode to the local community, where they proudly call, home. They’re also expanding their dessert collection by adding local favourites from Donut Monster and Bitten. On the corner of Lakeshore Road and Locust Street, Table 34 is in a prime spot for anyone who wants to explore the Burlington food scene. It has a beautiful view of Lake Ontario, sitting directly across from Spencer Smith Park. There’s also plenty of street parking with free parking on weekends in the nearby parkade, it’s close to the Burlington Performing Arts Centre (perfect for a bite to eat before or after a show), and it stands among some of the best restaurants and shops in town.Read More »

Who knew this sweet shoppe served brunch! Instead of hitting up another downtown Hamilton spot, I met up with my usual brunch crew in Dundas. We planned on eating at Detour but we found out they had a limited menu, so we skipped over to Jax Sweet Shoppe. A cute little diner in a collonial-looking building right on King Street. The space is small with enough seating for 20 people. It’s a straight-up diner with glossy steel tables, round and colourful chairs, walls filled with photographs, neon lights, and a retro CocaCola cooler with bottled Coke. A proud supporter of all things local and reasonably healthy menu items, Romby’s Tavern serves the usual pub fare with health conscious dishes sprinkled-in. The restaurant has called St. Catharines home for 30 years and in 2010, the Wilson family continued to run the restaurant with a few changes of their own. A shift in food and lifestyle cause a change in their menu as well. We all know when you go to a pub you want smoked meats, wings, nachos, and all the greasy foods your body can’t handle because, why not? The new owners kept those traditional items and added healthier options for those who prefer not to poison their bodies. Anchor Bar

Did you know the original restaurant where the Buffalo wing was invented opened up in Hamilton recently? They’ve been here, in Jackson Square, for a couple of years! Originating from, of course, Buffalo, NY, the restaurant is proud of its history. Anchor Bar just renovated the dining area and plan to spruce up their roof-top patio for the summer months. The restaurant can be accessed at street level off King Street West across from the Art Gallery of Hamilton, or inside Jackson Square across from the LCBO. The interior is spacious with grey walls, flatscreens, and a pizza station in the middle. There’s a modern sports bar vibe in this family-friendly environment, perfect for a casual dinner watching your favourite sports teams duke it out.

I’ve been meaning to check out The Works ever since my friend, Bobby, recommended it to me. Back then, I only knew of their Guelph location but now they’ve opened two locations in Hamilton. I was invited to check out the ‘Get Stuff’d’ menu and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on those burgers. On their regular menu, they have tons of burger combinations (41 to be exact) and toppings for you to choose from.
