Things to do in Niagara

As a natural wonder of Canada, it’s a destination that pulls in 30 million visitors per year. THIRTY MILLION. Other than being overwhelmed by the intensity of the rushing water, make a day or a weekend trip to explore the area! Niagara Falls isn’t a place where you just go for a few hours and call it a day. There’s way more to explore! To kick off another busy year, Niagara Parks provided a tour to spread the word on their attractions and restaurants.

It was a beautiful Spring day when the Niagara Parks‘ shuttle picked us up for a Niagara Parks Culinary Tour. Our day started at noon from Hamilton, traveling eastbound towards Niagara. Two years ago, I attended the same event with Hamilton and Toronto influencers. This time the crew was a little different but the wonderful hosts were the same; Chelsey, Ryan, Chris, and the gracious staff at the Niagara Parks attractions and restaurants.

A quick background. Established in 1885 as an agency of the Government of Ontario, Niagara Parks has been a steward of the Niagara River corridor for over 100 years. It stretches 56km along the river from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie with natural attractions, local restaurants, championship golf courses, and heritage sites. The 5 restaurants we visited were: Legends on the Niagara, Queen Victoria Place, Whirlpool, Queenston Heights, and Elements on the Falls. These restaurants are all Feast ON certified. Meaning that they are recognized by the Culinary Tourism Alliance for sourcing 25-50% of the food and beverage products within Ontario. And everyone knows, by supporting locals, it builds a stronger community.

So, things to do. Lots of eating, discovering, adventuring, and relaxing.

Bean Bar | 25th Anniversary

Bean Bar has been a Westdale staple since my high school days. When anyone would mention Westdale restaurants, Bean Bar would be one of the firsts to pop in my head. Their food is great but their dessert selection is what they’re known for. This year is Bean Bar’s 25th anniversary and to celebrate, they’ve made a few changes. A huge mural spans the length of the right wall as an ode to the local community, where they proudly call, home. They’re also expanding their dessert collection by adding local favourites from Donut Monster and Bitten. Nestled on the cozy street of Ossington, La Banane is a seafood wonderland hidden behind a simple storefront. You’ll easily spot the restaurant from the poppin’ yellow door and metallic gold sign against an all-blue facade. I’ve been waiting for the opening of CIMA since the owners’ of Romano’s mentioned it. Once the Cheese Shoppe on Locke closed down, they jumped at the opportunity. I was ecstatic that the restaurant was going to be Italian because it’s one of my favourites! My love will never die for Romano’s, but damn, when you see the decor and taste the food, you’d make the trip down to Locke Street too.Read More »

On the corner of Lakeshore Road and Locust Street, Table 34 is in a prime spot for anyone who wants to explore the Burlington food scene. It has a beautiful view of Lake Ontario, sitting directly across from Spencer Smith Park. There’s also plenty of street parking with free parking on weekends in the nearby parkade, it’s close to the Burlington Performing Arts Centre (perfect for a bite to eat before or after a show), and it stands among some of the best restaurants and shops in town.Read More »

Feast for St. Joseph’s

The annual event is back in Hamilton for its 4th year in a row. Feast for St. Joseph’s is a month-long fundraising event between February 19th to March 19th. Six local Hamilton restaurants are participating and 10% of your food sale is being donated to St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation.

Matsuri Sushi

Matsuri Sushi in Dundas has been highly recommended by my friend, Sid, for as long as I’ve known him and I finally went to check it out. Surprisingly, I haven’t explored the sushi bars in Hamilton but I’ve heard good things about Joya, and Kampai (the only one I’ve visited). Of course, we have the usual all-you-can-eat joints like Spring Sushi, August 8, Sapporo, and Tatemono but I’d rather indulge in fresh fish than mediocre sushi. Not hating on AYCE restaurants, I still hit them up every once in a while because it’s such a good deal.Read More »

Aberdeen Tavern

The stars aligned and I finally found an occasion (my birthday) to visit the infamous Aberdeen Tavern of Hamilton. They’ve been on my Places-to-Eat-in-Hamilton list since I started it a few years ago. It was also a last minute decision to even go out to celebrate because my plans for the evening fell through and my mom suggested we celebrate early.
