Matsuri Sushi in Dundas has been highly recommended by my friend, Sid, for as long as I’ve known him and I finally went to check it out. Surprisingly, I haven’t explored the sushi bars in Hamilton but I’ve heard good things about Joya, and Kampai (the only one I’ve visited). Of course, we have the usual all-you-can-eat joints like Spring Sushi, August 8, Sapporo, and Tatemono but I’d rather indulge in fresh fish than mediocre sushi. Canada’s first eatery to serve pokē is located right here in the heart of Hamilton, the Farmers’ Market. Sometimes it can be a maze down there: enter through the doors on Wilson Street, turn right to go to the lower level by using the ramp, continue going straight all the way down the hallway to the ‘Real Food Court’. I’m sure you’ve seen pictures of Han Ba Tang‘s food all over Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Make sure you check them out if you’re into Korean fusion food and cocktails. Well, the owner, Chae, has ventured into Japanese food focusing on authentic oriental noodles with western sauces using modern presentation and featuring many different types of Sake. Chef Kevin Shin traveled to Kaga (the original town of udon) to train under the udon masters. Our family friends highly recommended the restaurant and I also read fantastic reviews on Zomato. Just to be on the safe side, we made a reservation before heading out. The restaurant was easy to find with plenty of parking in the plaza. To our surprise, the restaurant was packed with customers waiting outside. It was a Thursday night and we didn’t expect to see it at full capacity.Read More »

Situated on Fairview Road, the restaurant is fairly easy to find. Sakai faces the road at Fairview Gardens Plaza, decorated with Japanese-style doors and window covers. Inside, you’ll find traditional Japanese décor and art. A long sushi bar runs along the right side of the restaurant, while elevated private rooms line the left side. We also like to devour poutine, butter chicken, gyros and hot, steaming bowls of pho. My brother suggested we give Ematei a try when we were struggling to decide on a restaurant. It’s located right by OCAD U, which is where I attended university. During the four years living by my school, I would walk by the restaurant but I didn’t try it out! There is plenty of parking in the area, you can find street parking, underground parking and parking garages. The exterior of the restaurant really reflects traditional Japanese architecture. Banners and lanterns hang from the make shift shingle roof and it’s identified by 3 Japanese characters. Inside you’ll find a sushi bar near the entrance and an intimate dining space.Read More »

After hearing good things about Kampai, I had to see for myself. I brought my mom here on a Sunday night, we arrived around 6:30pm and got a seat right away. Kampai has been at this location for 8 years and they have their regular customers. The interior consists of traditional Japanese décor with a sushi bar a regular bar. A very intimate and dimly lite restaurant serving fancy Pan-Asian cuisine. The front dining area is really small, it could probably accommodate 25-30 people.
