The are many restaurants and coffee shops opening up on James Street North this year and one of them is Knead Pizza! You might have heard or seen them during the Supercrawl weekend where they tested out some flavours. The restaurant is take-out or dine-in, seating about 30 people. There is a chalkboard menu for dining-in and a service bar if you decide on take-out. The atmosphere and decor is pretty casual with brick walls and simple decor. The kitchen is slightly open where you can take a peak behind the scenes.
I was introduced to ACE Bakery Mini Crisps at the Toronto FOOD & WINE Festival a couple weeks ago. ACE Bakery was their official bread sponsor and they were making all kinds of noise! This little Italian restaurant is tucked away on James Street South and is really easy to miss. I’ve driven by that area a bajillion times since I was a kid and I’ve never noticed the restaurant – it’s pretty much a hidden gem. Inside, seating is very limited with a few stools at the bar. The walls are painted red like tomato sauce. Decor is dated but it has a homey feel. Once you step in the door, you’re hit with the aroma of delicious pasta and pizza. Whenever my family and I get stuck on deciding on a restaurant for dinner, we somehow end up at New Northing Dumplings on Silver Star Boulevard in Markham. We keep going back because their dishes are less greasy compared to the majority of Chinese restaurants. The dishes are cold (tossed together like a salad), steamed, cooked in broth or boiled. There are also fried items but the cooking methods are pretty balanced. It’s a family-friendly restaurant with minimal effort put into interior design. Sitting on the corner of Dundas and Dufferin, The Lockhart has non-pretentious décor, chatty staff and a dark atmosphere. The cocktail menu and the furnishings will easily draw you in even if you don’t catch on to the little Easter eggs throughout the bar. Inside, you’ll find exposed brick walls, wood and metal furnishings, an assortment of chairs, simple murals, a beautiful bull skull, a neon sign saying “all was well”, and a glass bar lined with pennies. If you get a chance, take a seat at the bar. You’ll be able to see all the action and talk to the staff about the menus.

I first found out about this restaurant when I was browsing my Instagram feed. What caught my eye were a few things: Korean fusion tapas, pretty-looking cocktails (even though I’m not a drinker), their beautiful light bulb sign, and their decor. What I didn’t realize was their location… not downtown Toronto. I started my mini road trip in Hamilton and made my way to downtown Toronto then to North York. The restaurant is relatively easy to find, only being 2-3 blocks north of the 401. They don’t have a sign outside in English phonetics, just a sing with Korean characters in orange. You’ll see their giant light bulb sign once you peer through the window or walk in the restaurant.
Sitting on the corner of Fraser and Liberty, the restaurant is easy to find with tons of parking nearby. The area has a lot of reclaimed industrial buildings with some big name companies, design firms and local restaurants. The neighbourhood also has a collection of stunning houses and apartments. Inside the restaurant, you’ll find black and white décor with chalkboard illustrations. Obviously there will also be books, pencils and apples throughout the restaurant. The kitchen is a semi-open concept, so you’ll be able to see the cooks put finishing touches on the plates. The seating arrangement is comfortable with 2 main dining areas.

Quatrefoil is a gorgeous restaurant that sits on Sydenham Street in Dundas within a friendly neighbourhood. From their service to their tableware, I could immediately tell that they pay attention to the details. The atmosphere was elegant with an expensive yet fresh taste in decor, which was also reflected in the food. The weather was cooperating that Saturday afternoon, so the patio was a must.
